This week in literacy we learned /qu/ and /ou/ in Jolly Phonics. We are on the LAST set of sounds!
On Tuesday we started learning "how to" writing. We talked about how writers can write to teach you something. I told the kids they were now going to be the teachers and I was their student, and they could teach me anything they wanted. To start it off, I told them to teach me how to make a jelly sandwich. They gave me some directions like "get bread, get jelly, smash together". So, I then followed their directions literally and made a very silly looking sandwich (you may have seen this lesson before, I know I have had to do it as an adult to learn how to give specific directions). They then tried again and were more specific (first you need 2 pieces of bread, then use a knife to spread jelly) and it turned out much better :) They then wrote a how to about the topic of their choice.
We also started learning about character traits this week. We talked about how character traits are what make the character in the story unique inside and outside. We talked about our very favorite character in our classroom, No David, and picked some of his traits. We then read The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle and picked out some of her traits.
Lastly, Wednesday was read in an unusual place day at Indian Trail. We read in the hallway entrance to the library by the big globe. It was so fun :)

In math this week the focus was number writing. I noticed we all needed a little support in this area, and with more writing coming up as we move into learning addition and subtraction, I wanted to dedicate time to this. We used Handwriting Without Tears to formally learn the correct way to write numbers 1-10. We used the chalkboards and the wet to dry method (use a sponge to write the number, then trace and dry with a paper towel, then write it in chalk) and also completed a packet that was sent home. The students did great and I already saw a huge improvement in their numbers!
Wednesday, Sammy's mom Michelle came to do a PTO sponsored art lesson about Andy Warhol. It was a really cool lesson, and the students LOVED the Mickey art project at the end. Thanks for volunteering Michelle!
We had two mystery readers this week! Alex's cousin (and mom) came on Thursday, and Eli's grandpa came Friday.

With the beautiful weather this past week, we were able to go outside a few times!
We are packing a lot into the last full week before Spring Break, including finishing Jolly Phonics!
