Another fun week in our room!
On Monday we completed our weekend journals. We talked about the importance of adding details to our pictures and writing, and practiced labeling what is in our pictures. We also had ALO with Mrs. Belkind. We did a 3-act math task called "Dotty". The students watched a video that showed 6 dots with an accompanying beep. The screen then goes black, and you hear 4 more beeps. They had to ask questions and figure out how many more dots there would be, and what pattern they would be in. This was the first complex math task we have done this year, and they did great! It was so cool to watch their thinking and have them explain their reasoning. We will be doing many more of these with Mrs. Belkind.

On Tuesday we dove into letter writing. I noticed some students were writing letters last week, so I wanted to encourage this in the writing center. This has been a great way for students to practice their handwriting and phonics skills we have been learning. Thank you to all of you who sent in materials! This center has been SO popular. I hope many of you received some special letters in the mail this weekend :) Other centers this week included sorting in the sensory table, and of course ramp/block building.
On Wednesday we learned how to use the app Seesaw, which is a digital portfolio for each student. The students worked with a partner to record their favorite place in Highland Park and why. You will get to see all of the pictures and videos created on Seesaw at conferences! They did a great job being responsible with our iPads too.
We also continued with our center work.

Thursday we met our 3rd grade buddies in Mrs. Knotek's class! We had so much fun introducing ourselves and making a buddy book. And of course, we had more center time. We expanded our letter writing to siblings, teachers, and even our pets. Students were able to deliver their letters to teacher mailboxes... and some of them even wrote back! We also completed an S A T sound sort that came home with your student. These sorts are great practice for cutting, gluing, as well as phonics.
On Friday we reviewed our 3 letter sounds again with a scavenger hunt. Students had to hunt around the room for words that start with either S A, or T, and then record it on their sheet by coloring it in. We also got a real mailbox for our letter writing center which the students LOVE!
Next week we will do our first experiential center by turning our classroom into a post office! This will include more letter writing, sorting, patterning, and dramatic play. We also have a few STEM challenges to complete including Cardboard Challenge Day! You can read about this global day here: http://imagination.is/our-projects/cardboard-challenge/
