It was another busy but fun week in 124!
Announcements:
- Please refer to the email about Jolly Phonics and Handwriting Without Tears and the upcoming homework that will be coming home with the students.
- I have added "resources" tab to the top of the blog that will include links to both of the websites for you to use at home if needed. It also includes downloadable charts to help with the actions and the writing of the letters (I will also send home a hard copy as well)
- This week we started playing games on ABCya! The students loved them and they are great games for teaching and reviewing many letter and number concepts. If you are interested in playing them at home the link is: http://www.abcya.com/kindergarten_computers.htm
Monday in literacy we continued to practice our identification of upper and lower case letters. We played a whole class game of "I have who has" (each student has a card with 2 letters on it and they read it and say, for example, "I have A, who has F?" and another student responds). This was also great practice of our communication skills including asking and answering questions and participating in collaborative conversation. We have also played this game with numbers.
In math we combined our letter identification skills with our geometry shape recognition and completed these pattern sheets. The students loved this activity!

Tuesday we got to meet with our 3rd grade buddies again! This was definitely a highlight of the week. They are working on a buddy book together.

Tuesday we also used our environmental print material (thanks for helping the students with that!)
We all took turns coming up and saying what we can read and adding it to our collage. We then sorted labels and logos on the Promethean Board.
It is so important that the students feel confident about their reading abilities before we really jump in to it.
This was the perfect way to show that they ALL can already read :)

Thursday's literacy time included more center work. The focus of these was letter recognition and reading and creating high frequency sight words.
The 3 centers were a upper and lower case matching puzzle, Popcorn game (pulling out a letter and reading it), and using the magnetic letters to identify letters and create words. Many of the students spelled their names as you can see!

Math this week focused a lot on counting to answer the question "how many?", pairing each object counted with only 1 number, and understanding that the last number name said represents the number of objects. Some activities we did included games on ABCya counting out loud and identifying the number, picking a card with a number on it and then skipping on a giant number line to that number, and playing "I have who has) with numbers 1-30.
Friday in literacy we journaled. We are going to be doing journal writing once a week (on Fridays or Mondays) to focus on drawing, dictating, and writing to create a narrative piece. This week was a free write about whatever they wanted! Other times I may give them a topic or ask them to talk about their weekend. I will save all of these to show you at conferences.
Friday Mrs. Castillo-Oh (our ELL resource teacher) came in and read to our class, it was so much fun! This was a perfect way for the students to get to know her, because she will be working in our room a lot to incorporate Social Studies and additional literacy concepts into our day. We are so excited to have her help!

The students also earned recess time on Friday for their good behavior and Dojo points!
That about wraps up our week.
Look out for videos and pictures of our Jolly Phonics and Handwriting work next week.
