Reminder:
Jolly Phonics and sight word (first 6) will be assessed Monday (3/7).
This week in Room 124...
In literacy we dove into new centers. The focus this week was reviewing our Jolly Phonics sounds and our 6 sight words. Centers included a find and write sight word hunt, stamping words with our Jolly sounds and blends, a domino math game, listening to reading, Raz Kids on the ipads, and guided reading with me.
With our usual Monday journals we practiced peer editing. We split the class into "I detectives" and "period police". We talked about how "I" at the beginning of a sentence, or when it is a word, needs to be capitalized. We then talked about making sure there was a period at the end of our sentences when the thought was complete. The students then switched papers and edited each other's. They did great with this!

Of course in our classroom we celebrated Dr. Seuss Day BIG on Wednesday :) We read The Cat in the Hat Comes Back and talked about opinion writing. The students then did their own opinion writing answering the question "would you want The Cat in the Cat to come to your house?" Their answers are too cute, you'll be able to see those on display at conferences! After writing, we did a directed drawing to draw The Cat in the Hat. This was the first time we have done this and it was a great lesson in following verbal directions. The students loved it and we will definitely be doing more in the future. We ended our day with some very special mystery readers... our siblings! They read in small groups, it was so fun!
In math this week we did a variety of activities to practice number identification, writing numbers, and comparing numbers. We had the domino game in centers this week to continue working with them.We also pulled out the learning carpet, our 100's chart, and the number cards and worked together to fill in our grid. We talked about patterns we saw, number order, and oral counting. On Thursday we did a count the room activity. I hid St. Patrick's Day themed cards all over the classroom, and the students had to count to tell how many were on the card, fine the object on their sheet, and then write the number. This worked on so many math concepts and also their cooperation skills, as they decided to work in teams. It was a great activity!
We ended Read Across America week with our "cuddle up with a good book" pajama day! We had indoor recess, and then read to self time. The perfect Friday :)
