We wrapped up our color unit this week!
On Monday, we made and painted our chameleons inspired by A Color of His Own. I love how they are all so different! It was a perfect connection to identity and how we are all unique.

On Tuesday we read Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni and talked about mixing colors. We then went out to the courtyard and had our own mixing color laboratory! The students were free to explore the different colored water (red, blue, and yellow) and mix it however they wanted. After, we reflected on what happened and recorded what colors we mixed together to make new colors.
On Tuesday we also started Jolly Phonics and Handwriting Without Tears! We started with the letter "s". We practiced saying the sound, doing the motion, identifying words that start with S, and then writing it. We did this with "a" on Wednesday as well.
Lastly, we met our 3rd grade buddies from Mrs. Sidell's class on Tuesday! We introduced ourselves and started a buddy book. Pictures coming soon.

On Wednesday we read Yesterday I had the Blues by Jeron Ashford Frame and talked about how feelings can be represented as colors. We recorded which colors in the book went with which emotion. We had student choice center time (they are ROCKING the building and dramatic play areas! We will be doing writing corner and reading corner next week). We also did our first "write the room" activity for math, when the students had to hunt around the room for pictures, and then record how many they saw. It was a great way to practice writing and counting.
On Thursday we reviewed our color feelings and made "color popsicles" out of water and food coloring to use the next day to paint with. Thursday was also International Dot Day! This is inspired by the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds, and the purpose is to inspire creativity, courage, and collaboration. We read the book, and then the students tried marble painting to create their own dot. They turned out so cool!
Friday we painted outside with or feeling popsicles! It was so fun. Additionally, we have been focusing on characters and setting during our read-alouds. So, we read Louise, the Adventures of a Chicken, which has multiple settings in it. The students had to choose one to build, and then be able to identify it and the characters. They did great and were so creative! We also played outside and broke out the costumes in the dramatic play center :)
Next week we will continue to learn about community and start focusing on our community of Highland Park!
