Our newest experiential learning center, the vet office, was in full swing this week! It was so much fun! We kicked off the week reviewing the difference between living and non-living things. We made a list for each column, and then I had the students decide what kind of center they would want to play based off that list of living things. We narrowed it down to a zoo or a vet office, and the vet won. The parts of our office include the front desk, a waiting room, an area to build cages to house the animals, and an exam room. The focus of our center is "how do living things change over time?" The students fill out paperwork about their animals on what changes they have observed, and the doctor fills out paperwork on the changes they see. We will continue our center next week, focusing on asking and answering questions, and continuing to work on writing.
Besides all the math concepts embedded in the vet center (weighing the animals, counting blocks, building and identifying different shaped cages) in math this week we focused on 2D and 3D shapes. We built our background knowledge and drew all the shapes we already knew. We then used this really cool app called AR shapes to go on a hunt around the room for different shapes. the app then makes them "pop out". We discussed the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and watched a Brain Pop about it. We then started sorting 2D and 3D shapes. This week, we will continue to focus on 3D shapes and make robots with them!
Friday we played outside, and Mrs. Fonda was our mystery reader! She read us Pinocchio.
