It was a short but good week in Kinder!
In literacy this week, we wrapped up our review on Jolly Phonics set 4, practiced sight words, journaled about our weekends and continued with Second Step and learning about anger.
We moved from community to traditions in our thematic unit. We talked about the meaning of the word tradition and how it is something special you celebrate like a holiday, or maybe even something as simple as watching a movie every Friday night! The first tradition we talked about is losing a tooth and the Tooth Fairy. We read a book called Throw Your Tooth on the Roof that taught us all about different tooth traditions all over the world. We then read Franklin and the Tooth Fairy and wrote about what each of us does when we lose a tooth, and what we think the Tooth Fairy looks like :)

With our buddies on Tuesday we cut, colored, and played a math memory game! This was sent home with the students and would be a great game to play together at home. Any type of memory game is a great kindergarten-level game to play at home.
Math this week started with practicing combinations of 10. We continued with our task off putting the rod of unifix cubes behind our back, showing a certain number of them (say 1) and then figuring out how many are still behind our back (9). The students did this in partners and then recorded themselves on the iPads.
Our big math task this week was answering the question, "what is the best way to show different numbers?" We started by counting out 11 with unifix cubes, then turning it into a tower, and then turning that into 12. We then explored and tried different ways to represent 12 while trying to figure out the BEST way to show it. After trying many ways, the students discovered that showing 10 with 1 color of unifix cubes and then adding 2 more with a different color is the easiest way. On Monday we will review this and show 11 and 12 on double 10 frames.

Friday we had indoor recess.
We continued doing Star Wars yoga this week. We have been doing this as our brain break all week and it is AWESOME! It works on focusing our brain, stretching our bodies, and also story following. I linked it below if your child wants to do it at home.
Also, many of them have been asking me about watching more Alphablocks at home. If you just search "alphablocks" on YouTube, TONS will pop up. You can pick whichever suits your student!
