A few announcements (refer to the email for more)
- Your conference confirmation letter will be sent home with your child on Tuesday. PLEASE check their folder and let me know if you do not receive it! Conference are Monday, November 23, and Tuesday, November 24.
- Please refer to the community picture assignment that was sent home on Friday. Email your picture to me or send it in with your child by next Monday (11/16).
- If you still have recycled materials to send in for our ALO project, please do so by Tuesday!
This week in literacy was all about practicing our Jolly Phonics sounds, and learning more about identity.
We learned our last sound for this round, /d/, on Monday. The rest of the week was spent in centers reviewing. The 4 centers included playing an alphabet and sound game on the Promethean Board, a phonics game on the iPads, finding letters and objects that started with our sounds in "mystery rice boxes", and using the handwriting blocks to make the letters.
As you can imagine, using the iPads was a big hit!
Also, during our whole group morning meetings, we have been practicing blending words with the magnetic letters. The students LOVE doing this and coming up with different words they can blend, sound out, and then read. Each week they get better and better at doing it! This is also something that would be great to practice at home. You can use magnetic letters if you have them, or the flashcards that were sent home in the Jolly Phonics review packet.

On Friday we read the book What Do You Do With a Tale Like This? by Steve Jenkins. It is all about what different animals use their tails, eyes, ears, mouths, and feet to do. We loved guessing the different animals based off just one part of their body and learning about all the unique things they can do. We then related this to our unique identities and what we can do with OUR feet that is special. We made a page for our identity books about it which you will get to see at conferences! I was busy helping students trace their feet, so I didn't take any pictures :)
In math on Monday, we practiced counting within in 10 frames and 20 frames. We worked on 1 to 1 correspondence, counting on from a certain number, and figuring out how many more are needed to make 10 or 20. The best part was getting to use play-doh to do it!
We also introduced the concept of comparing 2 numbers this week. We did this with "alligator chomp" (greater than, less than, equal to) and introducing what those signs mean. We listened to this song:
We also worked as a class to practice using those symbols when comparing 2 numbers. We then played a "chomp" game in partners, where each student had to roll a dice, and the one with the bigger number had to say chomp. If it was a tie, they had to both say equal.
Other highlights of our week included having ALO in Mrs. Belkind's room, getting to play outside and enjoy the crazy beautiful weather with our buddies, and having Eli's mom be our mystery reader on Friday!
Next week we will finish up identity, and start talking about our community AND Thanksgiving!
