It was a fun week in Kindergarten!
This week in literacy we learned l, f, and b in Jolly Phonics and Handwriting.
We started talking about community this week and ones we belong to. We talked about our community of Highland Park. We looked at where we live on a map and talked about how we live near Chicago, in the state of Illinois, and in the US. The students LOVED looking at a map and finding other states and cities they have visited.
We then talked all about our new buddy class that lives in Miami, Florida!! I have a friend who teaches Kindergarten there, and we have been collaborating on ways to connect our classes. We found where Miami is on the map, looked at pictures and videos, and talked a lot about the weather and the differences in their community.
Our buddy class wrote us a little note and we wrote them one back! We are using our favorite places pictures (thanks for sending those in) to make a virtual book to teach them about our community.
I am so excited about this project :)

In literacy this week we also spent time practicing our reading center behaviors and building our stamina for reading independently. We learned a new speaking and sharing technique called "sitting EEKK" where you sit and read to a partner sitting elbow to elbow, knee to knee. We shared our Identity Books we made with each other!
In math this week we continued comparing numbers and practiced using higher level math vocabulary. The students played the CHOMP game we have been playing (they each roll a dice and the one with the bigger number wins) but now we added the greater than, less than, and equal sign cards that they have to put down. They then have to practice saying "____ is greater than/less than/equal to _____". We talked about how you read a math problem from left to right, just like you read a book.
I was so impressed with how well they did with this!

We also practiced working with shapes and graphing them with some thanksgiving shape boards.
With our 3rd grade buddies this week we made Thanksgiving bracelets! The big buddies read us the story of Thanksgiving, and each part was represented by a different color bead. We had so much fun :)
On Friday we finished off our Thanksgiving celebrating by watching Charlie Brown Thanksgiving during snack time :)
Friday Julia's Mom came and read as our Mystery Reader!
I hope everyone has a wonderful break and a happy Thanksgiving!
*side note, one of the Thanksgiving books we read talked about the wish bone, and the students were fascinated by it! So you may have kids wanting to pull the wish bone on Thursday ;)
Looking forward to see you all at conferences!
