This week in Room 124...
In literacy this week we reviewed our Jolly Phonics sounds, journaled about our weekends, continued talking about weather and signs of Spring, and did centers. To learn about signs of Spring, the students paired off and went outside to identify what they saw as signs of Spring. They took pictures on the ipads and made beautiful collages out of them! We then made a list of what we saw and why that means Spring is here. They then wrote about what they saw. Our centers this week were a continuation of last week's. I also met with the students one on one during this time to read with them and see the growth they have been making! So exciting to see :)

In math we continued practicing our addition skills. During centers some students played a "sum swamp" board game, and we continued with our equation matching eggs game. The students also worked in partners to practice adding two numbers together that are in picture form. For example, one card has 5 flowers on it, and the other has 3. Add them together and write the equation. Some of the students also used the double-digit cards and blew me away with how well they added. We also worked on this as a whole group and practiced explaining why and how we write equations. The students took a little addition assessment on Friday and ROCKED it!
The best part of our week was hands down our "surprise boxes". You may have heard your student talking about this. The district has ordered all kindergarten classes brand new toys and materials and they are being delivered almost daily. We are starting our day off by opening the boxes and getting to play with whatever is inside. It has been SO fun! We have gotten wooden blocks, a ramp kit, costumes, and a sand sifter. The students would tell you their favorite day was when they took all the styrofoam out of the block boxes and turned our room into a winter wonderland :) This has been a great opportunity to practice our collaboration and creativity skills.
This week we also did a mini scissor cutting lesson with our Occupational Therapist Mrs. Bean, our Erin's Law health lesson with our Social Worker Mrs. DeMarco, and with our buddies practiced graphing by making kite glyphs. Lots of special activities.
Last but not least, Friday we played outside, Eli's grandma was our mystery reader, and we saw the awesome 4th grade music concert! We also practiced some oral counting to 100 while we were outside. It was the perfect Friday.
Next week we will be doing our weather reporting center. The students will be writing the reports, drawing the backgrounds, and working together to be the reporters. I can't wait to see what they do!
