It was a short but fun week in room 124.
In literacy this week we focused on reviewing our Jolly Phonics sounds and wrapping up our unit on community.
Monday and Tuesday the students did phonics centers that included a puzzle, using the Jolly Phonics app on the ipads, practicing writing CVC words, building objects that included our sounds with Legos, and practicing writing words with our set 4 sounds.

On Wednesday, we used all our recycled materials (thank you SO much for sending all that in) to build Highland Park! The students picked and researched their favorite place with their buddy last week, and built it this week. After it was built, we used Google Maps on the iPad to look up where the place was located, and then place it on the correct street on our map we assembled on the rug. Our HP was complete with Indian Trail School, Toys R Us, Michael's, Panera, Fired Works, Frost, and the beach to name a few! It was such a fun project :)
We also continued with Second Step and learned about our emotions and how they can make us comfortable or uncomfortable. We talked about feeling happy, sad, excited, and scared.
During snack time this week we have been watching a series of videos called Alphablocks. These our a great review of our letter sounds and making words. This one below is for the /oa/ sound, but there are tons on YouTube if you want to watch them at home!

The students also learned about Martin Luther King Jr this week. We read a story about his life and wrote a dream we had. I was so impressed with some of their dreams they wrote down, they were so sweet! A lot of peace on earth, getting along with friends and siblings, and love :) They also read and made a little book about MLK with their buddies.
In math this week we continued to work on combinations of 10 as well as teen numbers using ten frames. We have been doing an activity where I show the students 10 unifix cubes in a rod, and then I put it behind my back and pull off some of the cubes. I then show them a certain number of cubes, say 4, and then they have to tell me how many are behind my back (6). We will be doing new math tasks next week.
Have a great long weekend!
